Member - Political Bureau of the Central Committee (1975-1981)Initially, Kania was a supporter of Gierek's leadership. Within the PUWP in the 1970s, he was responsible for security services. This role allowed him to grow to the position of one of the most influential members of the PUWP leadership. In the second half of the decade, he increasingly turned against the General Secretary. Alongside Stefan Olszowski and Wojciech Jaruzelski, he became a critic of Gierek's economic policy and a prominent candidate for his replacement. During the events of summer 1980, he took over the position of the General Secretary, which he managed to maintain only for one year.
