Head - Working Group CMEA (1974-1985)The installation of the Working Group CMEA of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany was another sign of the party’s intention to increase control over foreign trade. Naturally, the Working Group CMEA headed by Horst Tschanter had several CMEA-related tasks. Among them were the Standing Commission on Foreign Trade and the negotiations between EEC and CMEA. Witnessing the stalemate of this process, the Working Group CMEA proposed the most interesting initiative towards the EEC even advocating an independent East German approach. Tschanter’s proposals were forwarded to Günter Mittag who as Secretary for Economics was also responsible for this Working Group and maybe had some influence on Honecker’s views on the EEC.
