Rudi Mittig

(Reichenberg, 29/1/1925 - Berlin, 28/8/1994)

Deputy Minister - Ministry of State Security (1975-1989)

Short bio

As Deputy Minister of the Ministry of State Security, Rudi Mittag, received the unfiltered expertise by the Department (XVIII, Alfred Kleine and Horst Roigk) about the economic situation of the GDR. Archival evidence suggests that he played a crucial role in censoring the analyses before it reached the party leadership. While the alarming state of the economy was not extenuated, reference to its origins in the economic policy decreed by the SED leadership was removed.
