Vice Minister - Ministry of Interior (1962-1970)Szlachcic was a peculiar figure in the socialist elites of the 1970s. Although his career was strongly linked with the security services, after Gierek's take-over of power he became one of the main supporters of political rapprochement with the West. As one of the closest cooperators of the General Secretary in the early years of the decade, he coordinated and organised Poland's foreign policy. Szlachcic was also an important advocate of the cultural liberalisation and encouraged intellectual exchange with the West. At the same time, he was one of the first highly-positioned politicians to strongly condemn the economic policy and rising indebtedness. Due to his dangerously increasing influence and insubordinate position, he was sidelined by Gierek and Jaroszewicz in 1974.
